Who We Are

Dr. Katy Murray, DVM, PhD.

As the ZIRC veterinarian, Dr. Murray is the lead clinical veterinarian, and is the primary contact for diagnostic cases. She has been overseeing the diagnostic service at ZIRC since 2008, and runs the health and biosecurity program at the ZIRC facility, which houses approximately 45,000 wild-type, mutant, and transgenic zebrafish.

Dr. Michael L. Kent, MS, PhD.

Dr. Kent is a professor in the Departments of Biomedical Sciences and Microbiology at Oregon State University, and is a faculty member in the ODVL. He is co-PI of ZIRC and has been assisting the diagnostic services since ZIRC was formed in 1999. He has written over 200 papers on fish diseases, and over 40 on zebrafish diseases.

Dr. Sean Spagnoli, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Spagnoli is a board certified pathologist who recently joined the ODVL faculty. His expertise is veterinary anatomic pathology of zebrafish and he studies effects of underlying infections on research endpoints in zebrafish.

Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan, DVM, CertAqV.

Dr. Miller-Morgan is a member of the OVDL and assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He focuses on clinical medicine in aquarium fishes. He has more than 30 years experience in aquatic animal husbandry, health management and staff training. He is also a co-developer and instructor of aquatic animal health management in the Aquarium Science Program at Oregon Coast Community College. He serves as a back-up for Dr. Murray

Dr. Jerry Heidel, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Heidel is Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Sciences at the Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and recently retired as Director of the OVDL. He is a board certified veterinary pathologist and has over 30 years of experience in veterinary pathology and animal disease diagnostics, with an emphasis on aquatic animals. He is also certified as a Fish Pathologist by the Fish Health Section of the American Fisheries Society.

Dr. Christiane Lőhr, Dr. med. vet., PhD, DACVP

Dr. Löhr is a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and a faculty member at the OVDL. A board certified veterinary pathologist, she has over 20 years of experience in veterinary pathology and diagnostics of diseases in a wide range of animals including fish. Dr. Löhr’s area of expertise is molecular pathology in research and diagnostics.

David Lains, B.S.

He has been with ZIRC since 2000 and provides expert advice on water quality, systems, and nutrition.
